20 Exciting Things To Do After Christmas To Keep The Holiday Spirit

After the hustle and bustle of Christmas when you don’t know what day of the week it is, the post-holiday period is a great time to relax, reflect, and prepare for the new year. Whether you’re looking for fun activities to do with family and friends or personal projects to focus on, there are plenty of ways to keep the Christmas spirit alive.

In this blog, we will explore 20 exciting things to do after Christmas that will help you enjoy the rest of the holiday season, get ready for the new year and keep you in the holiday mood until you get that dreaded email from work.

1. Take Advantage of The Boxing Day Sales (In-Person Or Online)

Treat yourself to some retail therapy this Boxing Day. With a food coma thanks to delicious Christmas food, put your phone scrolling to use and look at the deals online. If you need an excuse to escape the family for a few hours, head to your local shops and boutiques on the day after Christmas.

Whether you prefer to brave the crowds and shop in person or browse online sales from the comfort of your home, take advantage of the discounts and sales to buy practical items you need or splurge on that one thing you’ve always wanted to get. You deserve that Dyson Hair Wrap!

2. Hit Up The Movies

Escape the cold, rainy weather and immerse yourself in the magic of the big screen. With plenty of blockbusters, powerful dramas and classic comedies, it’s a great way to keep the family entertained. You don’t even need to see something new – some cinemas replay holiday movies or older films. Either way, don’t forget to indulge in some popcorn and sweets!

3. Have Another Party! (But More Relaxed This Time…)

If your holiday mood is to have no Silent Nights (like us), gather your loved ones for another get-together. Or if the mulled wine is getting in your head, keep it relaxed and low-key.

Host a cosy game night, have a movie marathon with delicious snacks, or simply enjoy each other’s company over a relaxed dinner (hello leftovers). Either option is a great way to keep the Christmas spirit alive and burning.

4. Plan Your Expenses For The Next Year

As you transition into the new year, take the time to review your expenses from the past year and plan your budget for the upcoming year. If you’re really into adulting, consider your financial goals, like saving for a vacation or paying off debt (that old nasty chestnut), and create a plan to achieve them. This will help you start the new year on the right track and ensure a more secure financial future – or what we like to call not breaking your bank account. Future you is gonna love you.

5. Play Around With All The Presents You Got For Christmas

Take some time to fully enjoy and explore the gifts you received during Christmas. Whether it’s some new tach, a board game, or toys, the perfect way to soak in the great gift is by enjoying it.

6. Set Your New Year’s Resolutions

Nothing says self-love like setting yourself some New Year’s resolutions that you may eventually break, but we believe in you! Set yourself some more realistic goals like going to the gym at least once a week (every day is just not possible), or making friends. Set resolutions that excite you and can get you out of your comfort zone – the best things happen that way.

7. Experiment With Some Leftovers Or Try A New Recipe

The best part of Christmas is the leftover food. Create some cookies with maybe the leftover gingerbread house and do a cookie swap with friends and family, or use the leftovers to try a new recipe you’ve got saved on your phone.

8. Be A Stranger In Your Own City

The perfect thing about the UK, especially London, is that there is so much to see, do and explore. From museums and galleries to shows and ice skating, you can find some hidden gems to keep you entertained in the winter season. Even make the most of the sunlight and go for a walk if you’re in the rural areas. The town is your oyster – make the most of it!

9. Declutter Your House

A mindful activity to do after Christmas Day is decluttering your house. From the front door to the attic, grab a box or bag and start throwing away some rubbish, pack down the Christmas tree and festive decorations, burn some of your ex’s things (that’s just what I’ll be doing). Make it fun for the whole family and make it a game.

10. Declutter Your Digital Life

Take a total digital detox and wipe the slate clean by decluttering your gadgets. From your laptop to your phone, delete old photos, create more storage and get rid of stuff you don’t need. It might be time consuming, but it will be rewarding heading into the new year.

11. Donate Items That You No Longer Need

Do a good deed this holiday season and donate some of your items on the day after Christmas. With new presents and goodies from your Christmas bucket list, the holidays are always a nice time to give back to those who may be struggling this year. Let this be your random act of kindness before the new year finishes.

12. Pick A New Skill Or Hobby To Learn

Don’t wait for the new year to start trying new things or learning a new skill. Put the hot chocolate down and start looking into some ideas for finding the perfect hobby for you. Dip your toes into photography and capture the perfect picture for your Instagram, get creative in the kitchen and learn meals for your friends to eat, or get arty with a paintbrush and try a paint & sip session at your local Pinot & Picasso studio.

13. Start A New Daily Habit To Keep Up

Watching TikTok videos for hours is not the daily habit we want you to have. Starting each day with a morning walk or completing a crossword while having breakfast are just some wholesome daily habits you can consider these holidays.

14. Clear Out Your Social Media

Want to try a new feed for your Instagram? December is the time to do it. Start fresh and delete old images and videos. Are you really engaged with all the accounts you follow? Start unfollowing all the unnecessary accounts in your life and give your social media a bit of purpose.

15. Start An Indoor Garden

Bring the greenery indoors this winter and create your own indoor oasis. Decorate your room or home with some indoor plants like ivy, snake plants or succulents. Even if you’re not good at keeping plants alive (this could be your new hobby!), there are plenty of plants that don’t need too much care.

16. Book In A Restaurant You’ve Always Wanted To Go To

“We’ll have every course tonight, thank you.” Treat yourself after Christmas and take yourself to that restaurant you’ve always wanted to go to. Go solo, with your partner, friends or the kids and eat everything off the menu! That’s probably not possible, but indulge in good food and good company.

17. Book In A High-Tea

The perfect gift for someone this Christmas might be booking them into an experience like a high tea. Eat your way through sandwiches, scones and delicious treats while enjoying the warm decadent rooms of the savvy hotel you may be attending. Try a place with a view or an iconic venue.

18. Relax At The Beach Or Park

Beach? That’s funny. We don’t want you getting sick, but the park is great second choice. Take the kids out of the house and let them burn some energy on the playground, with a football or play with friends and family.

19. Plan And Create A Scrapbook

A fun way to look back on the year that was is creating a scrapbook full of memories. From that girls trip in November to Christmas Eve in December, spend some time and decorate a book for either yourself, a family member, the kids or friends. I’m sure it’d be a great coffee table book for your home.

20. Stay Home And Go On A Movie Marathon

Avoid the cold winter chill and people and watch as many movies in one sitting. Watching films with a hot chocolate in hand, popcorn in the other is maybe one of the best ideas we’ve had, right?

Make it a movie marathon by watching series like Harry Potter, Twilight or Marvel movies. Or steer away from movies and watch a season or two of your favourite TV show. It’s your life and your holiday!

What is Canvas Art? A Beginners Guide to Canvas & Acrylic Paint

What is Canvas Art? A Beginners Guide to canvas & Acrylic Paint - Pinot & Picasso

An artwork always starts with a blank canvas. From acrylic painting to working with oils, canvas art embraces many artistic styles. Many artists create with many different mediums but canvas print will always remain top tier.  So why do we love it so much, and how can you best use it in your creations?

What is Acrylic Canvas Art?

One of the most exciting things about acrylic canvas art is staring at a blank canvas, picturing it being transformed into a masterpiece. Acrylic painting allows you to use vibrant colours to cover a canvas which was the art form that inspired painting geniuses like Jackson Pollock.

Acrylic Canvas Art vs Acrylic Canvas Prints

So, what’s the deal with acrylic canvas art versus acrylic canvas prints? Well, it’s like comparing the thrill of creating your own piece of art to the joy of appreciating printed masterpieces.

Acrylic canvas art is all about you, your vision, and the sheer joy of bringing it to life. On the other hand, acrylic canvas prints are like eye-catching replicas of stunning acrylic paintings, ready to adorn your walls without getting your hands dirty. Both have their own charm and perks, but it depends on the type of creative YOU are as to which one you prefer.

What is Acrylic Paint?

Let’s talk about the king of paints (our personal fave): acrylic paint. It’s like the Picasso of the paint world, bold and versatile. It’s water-based, dries quickly, and gives you the power to layer colours and create breathtaking effects on your canvas. Unlike its oil-based cousins, acrylic paint loves a splash of water and is super easy to clean up. So, no more worrying about getting into a sticky situation when you’re on a creative streak.

What is Canvas Art? A Beginners Guide to canvas & Acrylic Paint

Acrylic Paint vs Watercolour vs Oil Paint

In one corner, we have the feisty acrylic paint, known for its boldness and versatility. With a water-based composition and quick-drying powers, acrylics offer a colourful playground for artists to explore. Layer it, mix it, and add texture to your heart’s content. It’s the cool kid of the paint world, making art accessible to all with its wide range of pigments and easy cleanup.

In the opposite corner, watercolour steps in, bringing a touch of ethereal beauty to the fight. This translucent medium dances delicately on the canvas, capturing light, shadows, and the sweet nuances of nature. With water as its faithful companion, watercolour effortlessly blends and flows, creating soft and whimsical washes of colour. It’s perfect for those seeking a dreamy and enchanting aesthetic in their paintings.

And finally, making a grand entrance, we have the heavyweight champion, oil paint. With its rich and vibrant pigments, oil paint creates bold and timeless masterpieces stroke by stroke. Its slow drying time allows for seamless blending and intricate details, giving depth and intensity to your artwork. Oil painting is the grand maestro, conducting a symphony of colours that captivates the eye.

What is Canvas Art? A Beginners Guide to canvas & Acrylic Paint

Each paint has its own unique qualities and moments in the spotlight. Whether you choose the versatility of acrylic paint, the ethereal charm of watercolour, or the timeless elegance of oil paint, let your artistic vision guide you. Embrace the paint that speaks to you, and let the battle of the paints commence (sorry not sorry, we can be really dramatic).

Advantages of Acrylic Paint:

There are many advantages to acrylic painting. Here are just a few:

  1. Pigments Galore: Acrylics come in a dazzling array of pigments, ensuring your painting bursts with stunning colours.
  2. Layer It Up: You can pile on the colours, creating depth and dimension that’ll make your art pop.
  3. Texture, Baby: Acrylics are all about texture. Grab a brush, a palette knife, or even your fingers, and create captivating textures that’ll add a touch of magic to your masterpiece.

Acrylic Painting Techniques:

When it comes to acrylic painting techniques, it’s all about layering. Think of it as building a delicious sandwich, but instead of mayo and lettuce, you’re stacking colours, patterns, and textures.

Play around with different brush strokes, try splattering or even pouring techniques, and let your creativity run wild. There are no rules when it comes to acrylic paint.

Beginner’s Guide to Different Canvases

Let’s talk canvases, shall we? They’re the surfaces where your artistic ideas come to life. Here’s a beginner’s guide to different canvases, so you can make an informed choice for your next creation:

Understanding the Difference in Canvases

When it comes to canvases, you have a buffet of options. You’ve got your trusty cotton canvas, versatile and widely used in the art world. Then there’s the classy linen canvas, known for its smooth surface and durability. And if you’re feeling adventurous, synthetic canvases offer unique textures and are often budget-friendly.

Choosing the Right Canvases

Now, let’s find the perfect canvas match for your artistic aspirations:

  • Pre-Stretched Canvases: These ready-to-go canvases are the instant noodles of the art world. They come in various sizes, and all you need to do is unpack and start painting. Easy-peasy.
  • Canvas Panels: If you’re an art-on-the-go kind of person, canvas panels are your best buddies. They’re lightweight, portable, and perfect for unleashing your creativity anywhere and everywhere.
  • Canvas Rolls: Feeling like a rebel? Get yourself some canvas rolls. Cut and stretch them onto your desired frame, and boom! You’ve got a custom canvas size that’s as unique as your creativity.

What Do You Need?

Alright, let’s gather your artistic arsenal. Here’s what you’ll need to embark on your creative journey:

  • Acrylic Paints: A colourful palette of acrylic paints will get your creation started. Choose your favourite shades and get ready to paint the town… or canvas.
  • Acrylic Paint Brushes: Like a band with different instruments, you’ll need an assortment of brushes. Grab a variety of sizes and shapes so you can be prepared for whatever you decide to paint.
  • Art Materials: Time to get creative. Palette knives, sponges, or even those old toothbrushes collecting dust in your bathroom drawer can be transformed into tools of artistic expression. Embrace the unexpected.
  • Stretcher Bars or Wooden Frames: It’s time to give your canvas a sturdy backbone. Choose the size that fits your vision, stretch your canvas, and get ready to create a masterpiece that’ll make heads turn.
  • Frame It Up: Want to add a touch of sophistication to your masterpiece? Consider framing it, because your masterpiece deserves to be hung in The Louvre – or your home. A wooden frame is a popular option among most artists. You can also paint your wooden frame a certain colour to match your painting.
  • Gesso: The secret weapon of artists. Gesso acts as the primer for your canvas, preparing it for all the colours you’re daring to play with. So don’t forget to give your canvas a gesso coat before starting.

FAQs

Is Acrylic Painting Hard?

Not at all! Acrylic painting is a care-free activity filled with colours, laughter, and maybe a few happy accidents along the way. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned artist, acrylics are here to make your artistic journey as smooth as a paintbrush gliding across the canvas. No talent necessary, as we like to say.

How Long Does Acrylic Paint Last on Canvas?

When treated with love and displayed away from harsh elements, your acrylic masterpiece can last for decades. So go ahead and create with confidence, knowing that your acrylic print will stand the test of time (or as long as you want it to last).

When Should I Use Acrylic Paint?

The answer is simple: whenever you want! Acrylic paint is incredibly versatile and can be used on various surfaces like canvas, paper, wood, or even your neighbour’s old rocking chair (with permission, of course).

Can I Mix Acrylic Paints?

Absolutely! Mixing acrylic paints is a fundamental part of the artistic process. Don’t be afraid to get adventurous with your colours on your palette.

Do I Need to Water Acrylic Paint Down?

Not necessarily. The choice is entirely yours. If you want a more transparent and watercolour-like effect, adding a little water to your acrylic paint can do the trick. But if you prefer a thicker consistency, you can use the paint straight from the tube. The beauty of acrylics lies in their versatility, so do experiment and find the perfect balance that suits your artistic vision.

Top Benefits of Pet Canvas Art and Why you should create your own

Top Benefits of Pet Canvas Art and Why you should create your own

Top Benefits of Pet Canvas Art and Why you should create your own

Pet owners are always thinking of new ways to deepen their connection with their trusted companions. One way to do this is to create custom pet canvas art.

Immortalising your pet on canvas is an exciting prospect, and doing the painting yourself is even better. Even if you’re not a confident artist, you can take advantage of an instructed paint and sip session to make the process easier and more enjoyable.

Whether you’re the proud animal parent of a dog, cat or albatross, there are many benefits of pet canvas art to consider.

  1. It will make the perfect gift
  2. Cement your pet as a family member
  3. Give your gallery wall a talking point
  4. Creatively capture your love for your furry friend
  5. An evening to remember with friends and family
  6. Honour them forever
  7. No one knows your pet better than you

1. It will make the perfect gift

Birthdays. Weddings. Christmas. We’re constantly required to come up with new gift ideas for our friends and family members. If your connection with your pet is shared by another person you love, a DIY portrait is a surefire winner.

Forget socks and chocolates. From partners to parents, custom pet canvas art is the special gift they never knew they needed.

2. Cement your pet as a family member

Your pet is as much a family member as any person in your clan. What better way to let the world know than a stunning portrait? Once you’ve gone to the effort of creating and displaying your artwork, there will be no doubt that your four-legged friend has a permanent place in the family hierarchy.

What features of your pet are most endearing? Use the opportunity to emphasise your animal’s most distinct attributes, be it cute, quirky or fearsome. Family photos do a great job of incorporating the personality of their subjects, and your pet canvas art is no different.

3. Give your gallery wall a talking point

Once you knock your pet portrait out of the park, there will be no doubt as to which painting will receive pride of place on your gallery wall. Whether you’ve created a pop-art puppy or an impressionistic kitten, your animal artwork deserves centre stage in your house. It will soon become the ultimate conversation starter, and you’ll get to watch jaws drop as you casually mention that you painted it yourself.

4. Creatively capture your love for your furry friend

Did you top your primary school art class? An evening spent creating a custom pet portrait is the perfect time to come out of retirement and put your creative flair to good use.

You might be wondering: I’ve got hard drives full of pictures of my pet, so why bother with a painting?

While photography does a great job of recording memories exactly as they occurred, canvas art offers a completely different dimension of insight and passion. Take full artistic licence and portray your pet in a new light.

5. An evening to remember with friends and family

Once you’ve caught the pet canvas art bug, you’ll soon share your plans with every animal lover you know. A paint and sip night with friends and family is a wonderful weekend plan. It’s even better when you walk away with stunning portraits of your dear companions.

If the idea of hosting an evening of paint and wine with your favourite pet owners sounds a little bit too messy, let Pinot & Picasso do the heavy lifting. Our studios have everything you and your gang of animal lovers need for an unforgettable evening.

6. Honour them forever

Our pets give us companionship, love and joy. Imagining life without them seems impossible. As much as we wish our favourite animals would stay with us forever, the day eventually comes when they are no longer by our side.

A gorgeous portrait is the perfect way to memorialise your beloved pet. It announces to the world just how special your relationship is and will honour them in a way no photograph can.

7. No one knows your pet better than you

When you make the decision to create pet canvas art, you have a number of options. The easy way out is to simply commission a painting from a professional artist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do people paint their dogs?

People paint their dogs because they see them as family. If you love your animal as much as any person, capturing your animal’s heart and soul with a hand-crafted painting is the best way to show it. Photos have their place, but custom pet portraits are an undeniable proclamation of love and appreciation.

How to take a good portrait photo of your pet

The best results for custom pet portraits require you to work based on an image. Some top tips for snapping the perfect picture of your pet include:

  1. Have the camera level with your pet.
  2. Avoid flash by utilising natural light.
  3. Patience is a virtue.
  4. Play around with angles and camera settings.
  5. Use toys or treats to distract your pet.
  6. Focus on the eyes – they tend to be the most expressive part of an animal.
  7. Schedule your session at a time when your pet is sleepy, not energised.
  8. Stray away from overly-cluttered backgrounds.
  9. Act quickly when the perfect shot presents itself.
  10. Experiment and don’t forget to have fun!

How to hang a canvas

You don’t need to be a DIY expert to display your masterwork. Hanging a canvas requires just four simple steps:

Step 1: Mark the wall with a pencil.

Step 2: Hammer in, stick or otherwise attach the wall hook.

Step 3: Attach a bracket, sawtooth hanger or wire to your canvas.

Step 4: Place your masterpiece on the wall. Perfectionists might use a spirit level to ensure that it is completely straight.

What is Neon Nights?

Pinot and Picasso Neon Nights Paint and Sip

You’ve probably heard of this really cool, really fun creative experience and thought “what is Neon Nights?” Neon Nights is our paint and sip experience under UV lights. What does that mean?

In order for your artwork to have a “glow” up, we need to turn the lights off and turn on special UV lights. Even though we use neon paint, your artwork unfortunately won’t glow in the dark at home- it gets by with a little help from their friend (UV lights). However, the experience is what you buy the tickets for!

We say the fun continues after dark with our Neon Nights paint and sip experience, and we mean it. The vibe well and truly heightens with a popping party playlist (dare you to say that five times fast) as you create a unique masterpiece.
